Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa succeeded Anuradhapura as the capital in the 11th century and is known for its well-preserved ruins, including royal palaces, Buddhist temples, dagobas (stupas), and statues. The Gal Vihara rock temple with its large Buddha statues carved out of granite is a highlight.
Polonnaruwa reflects a golden era of Sinhalese culture and architecture, particularly under King Parakramabahu I, and is a testament to the sophistication of Sri Lanka's medieval period.
