Anuradhapura

The Sacred City of Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Established in the 4th century BCE, it was the center of Theravāda Buddhism for centuries. The city is home to ancient stupas, monasteries, royal palaces, and the sacred Bodhi Tree (Sri Maha Bodhi), grown from a sapling of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Anuradhapura is a sacred site for Buddhists and a key archaeological and spiritual center showcasing early Sinhalese civilization.
